CRAG (Coaley Recreation Action Group) was formed of a group of villagers, including Parish Councilors, to redevelop Coaley Recreation Ground. Since then we have been busy making this happen!
Consulted villagers and compiled feedback
School children were consulted to design a logo for CRAG. The winning Logo was designed by Elise with 2nd place to Jasmine and Juno and Poppy in joint 3rd place. Their designs were then further developed by Abby Birkbeck into the design we use today
Concept plans created by Elizabeth Ely of Elizabeth Ely Landscapes
Usage surveys of the Rec completed
Tug of war competition at Coaley Fete, won by Harriet Spyvee's team - the trophy on display in the village shop!
Creation of CRAG Facebook page
Sourced picnic benches
Land Survey by Simon Little of Elevation One
Fundraising: Refreshments at Berkeley Green Park run, Old Fox pub quiz, Fish and Chip Quiz, Halloween event and MORE!
Great work by Coaley Rangers (part of Girlguiding Gloucestershire) on Monday 1st July, who painted the design on the village bus stop! And thanks again to Bailey Paints (Rabart Decorators Merchants) for the donation of paint.
The village Guide unit came to inspect their finished artwork too!
Volunteers will finish the bus stop off by painting the bench and the floor.
The play area was swept and tidied and any remedial work needed on the existing equipment done.
These little bits of maintenance and looking after will ensure that the equipment we do have will last as long as it needs to while the new areas are being designed and installed.
The grass and edging of the pump track was tidied up with a strimmer which should now make it a lot easier and safer to use the pump track.
As well as this, the basketball court was swept, weeded and the grass edge tidied up.
The majority of the work on the tennis courts was cleaning the playing surface of all the weeds and loose stones that had been collecting on there.
As well as this, the bench was repaired to keep the free-to-use tennis and Pickleball equipment.
The field was litter picked, the parking areas were swept, the signs cleaned, and the large amount of remaining soil from the original pump track build has now been tidied up.
A few other photos of our happy volunteers and our hard days fun in the sun!
The rec took delivery of 3 new 100% recycled plastic picnic benches on Wednesday 17th April. These were put up in no time and have been positioned around the outside of the shop. This is not necessarily the final situation for the benches, but with the nice weather why not get them out for people to make use of!
2 of these benches are very cleverly designed for accessibility and would allow a wheelchair / pushchair etc to be sat up at the table.
We can also confirm that cheese wraps taste much nicer when sat on the new benches.....
On 8th November 2024 CRAG took delivery of the wooden log equipment for the REC. This was unloaded and placed into position around the field in what we think will be their final homes.
Thanks to Graham, Dave, Matt, Elizabeth and Les (not pictured!) for aiding the delivery and we think it will be loved this much!
Thanks to Josh from Keystone Environmental who spent a morning clearing the brush from around the recreation ground, opening up the access for vehicles and also for cutting back the brambles which were growing into the tennis courts. The work has transformed the site and made it much more manageable for us in future. It was so important to do this at this time of year when the birds are not nesting.
During one of our Nature Days, intrepid enthusiasts assembled a bug and bee hotel out of some donated pallets, slate tiles, cardboard tubes, sticks, twigs, and everything else that the modern bugs require for their abode!
Free play days with World Jungle and Raffles Forest School
Monkey bars re-homed

Tree Planting
In April 2025 three trees were planted in the community space sponsored by members of the Coaley Community. We have enjoyed seeing them settle into their surroundings and grow leaves and then shed them again this Autumn.
They are field maples (Acer campestre 'Elsrijk') and were carefully selected for the site.
This morning 3 horse chestnut trees were planted on the rec. These trees are 4 years old, having been collected as conkers from the churchyard and looked after by Elise and her family. We were thrilled to have been contacted by Elise as these trees form part of our ongoing planting plan.
If you would like to sponsor a tree on the rec please contact us on CoaleyRecActionGroup@gmail.com for information.
Coaley Recreation Action Group (CRAG) is delighted to announce that it has reached its £36,000 fundraising target to refurbish the Toddler Park at the Recreation Ground — and that the order for the new play equipment has now been formally placed with leading playground provider KOMPAN.
A huge thank you to all the amazing volunteers who were hard at work today helping to improve the Recreation Ground.
Rec volunteers spent the morning landscaping the compost area and planting new trees, helping to enhance the space for everyone to enjoy.
Members of CUCAN also began laying the new slab paths — a fantastic step forward in improving access around the compost area.
In the picnic area, volunteers planted two acer trees and a conker tree, already beginning to transform the space while creating valuable habitat for wildlife.
It’s wonderful to see the Rec evolving thanks to the time, energy and dedication of our community. Thank you to everyone who came along and got involved — your hard work is making a real difference!
