Happy First Birthday to Coaley Sensory Garden!
A Busy Spring at the Rec, with lots of progress, plenty of community involvement, and some brilliant moments of village spirit.
Since opening the Toddler Park, we’ve seen families enjoying the swings, tractor, slide and all the new equipment on a daily basis. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’ve been making small improvements in response to your suggestions — including relocating the rubbish bins and exploring ideas for future additions. One popular request was for bike racks, and we’re delighted that the District Council has agreed to provide these.
Watering the new trees, now coming into blossom
Cleaning the Rec entrances and weeding the paths and plaza
Repairing hazards on the multi‑play, court fencing and car park rails
The CRAG chair gave a presentation to the well attended Parish Council AGM in April about progress during the year.
Supporting Garden Birds focussed on from food and habitat to understanding when not to feed them over the summer. With displays on native birds, eggs and feeding habits, plus crafts and refreshments, it was a lovely morning of learning and creativity. This was particularly important following released guidance to not feed garden birds seed from May to September due to risk of disease and so our session came at a perfect time to share this information with our community!
Over the course of two weeks in May, volunteers turned out with gloves, goggles and plenty of enthusiasm to clear the weeds using battery strimmers kindly loaned by CUCAN. Over the landscaping weekend itself, the transformation was remarkable. With a 3‑ton excavator generously provided by Rocket Rentals, volunteers shaped the mounds into safe, attractive natural features ready for informal play, rolling, climbing and family seating.
During June the surfaces will settle and be seeded and green up over the summer, creating a much more welcoming landscape at the heart of the Rec. Thank you to everyone who gave their time, energy and good humour.
Our most colourful and calming corner of the village is officially one year old — and what a transformation it has been. From a bare patch of ground to one of the Rec’s most loved spaces, the Sensory Garden has become a joyful, inclusive haven thanks to the hard work of so many villagers. A huge thank‑you to everyone who has grown, planted, watered, weeded, swept and cared for the garden throughout the year. And our biggest thanks go to Elizabeth Ely, whose thoughtful design and ongoing dedication continue to shape this extraordinary space. Here’s to another year of colour, scent, texture and community pride
